LEAS LAB August Newsletter

Looking forward to more Science in 2021

While the pandemic shut most colleges, schools and labs the world over, LEAS LAB emerged from our commitment to keep science growing.

In our first year, we welcomed 15 students -- from 5 different states, and at least 3 different countries -- through our virtual 'doors'! As LEAS LAB enters our second year, we have exciting plans to run in-person courses, develop advanced material for alumni, and expand partnerships with other science-focused organizations.

Our commitment to mentoring includes connecting alumni with working scientists, identifying internship and job opportunities. Alumni PLEASE stay in touch, and let us know how LEAS LAB has helped you!

Returning to in person!

It may now be time for some of you to return to college, or even start a new job, IN PERSON.  How will this feel?  How did your year or so at home change your perspectives on science and lab work?   Take some time to reflect on these past months -- your experiences may have been more helpful than you realized.

Work from past experiences and use your transferable skills

Anything you have done over the past year could contribute to your resume. For example, one LEAS LAB student grew his own mushroom farm!  This requires aseptic (sterile) techniques.  Another LEAS LAB student grew her business knitting (building product, advertising, managing shipments and a budget).

Don’t underestimate your experiences; they are valuable and will make you stand out in the job application process.

Did you take part in Science without knowing it

Have you talked with friends or family about COVID-19?  You may have had to explain aspects of the disease, viral transmission, or how the vaccine works.  You may have come across questions you didn't know how to answer, and had to educate yourself and return for explanations.  If so, you've improved your skills in scientific research, literature review, scientific communications.  Don't forget to highlight these skills in your resume!

Taking part in crowd sourcing experiments is an excellent way to contribute towards the scientific community and can be a great talking point in an interview.

For example Eterna invites contributors to become RNA scientists. Contributors solve puzzles to design specialized RNA-based medicines and sensors, receive feedback after their designs are built and tested in a lab at Stanford, and work together to build knowledge about how RNA works. PLUS This is a SciStarter Affiliate project. You can earn credit in your SciStarter Dashboard for your participation.

LEAS LAB OPEN HOUSE coming fall 2021. Email us if you are interested in attending or available to volunteer.
