What our students say!

That part was really fun and it made me really excited to work with and use the equipment in the upcoming days. My expectations for the week are to learn a lot about how doctors work to come to a diagnosis and to learn about the different body systems and how each of those are important. I am also expecting to learn a few more lab skills!

The case stood out to me the most because I have never done anything like it before! It was a new way of learning hands-on, and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it! I had kind of written off medicine as a career path, but the case made me realize that it might actually be something that I would enjoy!

Anna

I learned how important it is to note everything in your journal so as to reference it in case something doesn’t go as planned. Along those lines, I also learned that experiments are imperfect. And scientist shouldn’t have a fixed idea about what is going to happen, but rather take it one step at a time and evaluate at the end.
I really loved that I was able to counsel patients! I always wanted to feel the clinical side of pharmacy and I believe this course helped me gain that experience. I’ve had some experience in dry and wet research as well as community/retail pharmacy, and I don’t think they’re very much for me. This course helped me to realize that I am on the right path, pursing a clinical pharmacist career!
I think the hands on learning is the most valuable part of this course (ex. PCR machine, pipetting) I also think the mock patient diagnosis activity is very important.
I had an excellent experience. I really enjoyed the intimacy of the small group, and the instructors created a safe environment where I felt like I could take risks, learn, be curious, and have fun.

Lab Skills

CoVID19 testing!

In the PCR lab I learnt scientists shouldn’t have a fixed idea about what is going to happen, but rather take it one step at a time and evaluate at the end.

It was really interesting to see and learn how the PCR machine works!

The ER patient

Meeting their first critical patient ‘Ellie’

I now understand that the immune system kind of connects our whole body and that a respiratory disease like CoVID19 can have an effect on many other parts of the body.
Today’s case stuck out to me the most. In addition to being engaging, I loved how it was challenging and really allowed me to think about every possible scenario
— Natasha
I know it was just a simulation but I was genuinely panicking trying to think of what we could do for our patient!

Vital signs

Learning your pulse points!

I will definitely remember the vital signs because we talked about why they were in certain ranges rather than just receiving the information.
